A week long practical yoga training infused with cultural events is conducted every year in Rishikesh(The world's capital of yoga) known as International yog festival.
It began in year 1990 as a selfless Initiative of Sri Bharatbhushan ji for the wellbeing of fellow humans. He is the First ever recipient of coveted 'Padmashri' by Government of India for yoga. The Purpose of First ever International Yog Festival was to spread the literal meaning of the word "yoga" which is Union of consciousness with body. In Yoga, Lord Shiva is considered the Adi Yogi and the Adi Guru.
He is the foremost among the yogis and the first teacher of the science of Yoga. The disciples later spread the art and were called yogis. The beginning was small with cosmopolitan mix of 40 participants from various countries such as Germany, Australia, Britain, Italy, Israel and America. Most of them were travelers taking interest in yoga festival as a longer trip in India.
Since then the love for yoga has grown tremendously on international level. yoga has also been Identified by United nation for its universal appeal.
The proposed International Yog Festival for year 2018 will be conducted from 1-7 March and will be joined by several national and foreign dignitaries.
The theme for the 2018 celebration, organized by Uttarakhand tourism department and GMVN is 'Yoga for Health' , and highlights the fact that yoga can contribute in a holistic way to achieving an equilibrium between mind and body. we believe that this approach to health and wellbeing can make a direct and useful contribution to humankind's quest to achieve sustainable development and move towards lifestyles that are in harmony with nature.
